Ebonyi Assembly Moves To Ban Masquerades In Community

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has taken steps to prohibit masquerading in public places within Ohaukwu Local Government Area, the Speaker, Moses Odunwa, announced on Thursday during the first-year commemoration of the 7th State Assembly members.

The decision, according to Odunwa, aims to swiftly and definitively address what he described as acts of barbarism in the region, particularly highlighting an incident where a masquerade known as “Ugwoke Omebe” reportedly assaulted religious ministers at Okwor Ngbo Market.

Odunwa underscored the legislative achievements of the seventh assembly, citing the enactment of 16 laws and the introduction of six motions aimed at advancing economic development within the state. Among the laws passed are the Ebonyi State Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency Law 2023, Ebonyi State Boundary and Allied Matters Commission Law 2023, and Ebonyi State Rural Access Roads Authority Law 2023, among others.

In addition to legislative accomplishments, the assembly also initiated motions to upgrade ten Model Junior Secondary Schools to operational status and to rehabilitate a culvert on the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway, previously noted as hazardous but now safely repaired and open for traffic.

Furthermore, Odunwa highlighted the assembly’s resolution concerning the 2024 budget proposal of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission for local government elections, underscoring it as another milestone of their inaugural year in office.

The move to ban masquerading in public places within Ohaukwu Local Government Area reflects ongoing efforts by the Ebonyi State House of Assembly to address cultural practices affecting public safety and communal harmony in the region.
