Labor Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi said he did not congratulate President-elect Bola Tinubu because the process by which he was elected was not transparent.
The former Anambra State governor believes he
won the February 25, 2023 election and vowed to explore all legal options to regain
his mandate.
In a press conference in Abuja, Obi said he
is questioning and challenging the process as it does not meet minimum
standards for free, fair and credible elections.
He said: “We will examine all legal and
peaceful ways to regain our mandate. We won the elections and we will prove it
to the Nigerians."
Obi said the election "will go down in
history as one of the most contentious elections ever held in Nigeria."
“Rest assured that Datti and I will work and
it will not be the end but the beginning of the legal path. People must remain
unquestionably and deeply involved in the project of a new Nigeria,” he said.
During the briefing, Obi observed a minute's
silence for all injured and deceased victims of the February 25 inquest.
Tinubu won the election by 8,794,726 votes,
beating Obi and the other 16 candidates who received the most votes, according
to data released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He also received more than 25% of the votes
cast in 30 states, more than the 24 states required by the Constitution.
Atiku Abubakar of the People's Democratic
Party (PDP) was second with 6,984,520 votes and Peter Obi third with 6,101,533
votes.
