Ranching, Not Cow Ownership, Key to Sustainable Livestock Management

By Polycarp Onwubiko

The National President of Miyetti Allah Breeders Association of Nigeria, Othnan Ngeizarma in a television interview reportedly claimed that ninety five (95) percent of the cows being driven by the herdsmen are owned by the herds drivers while five (5) are owned by the so-called "big men in the cities".

This assertion is not only baseless but an attempt to justify that the mindless slaughtering of indigenous people by terrorists masquerading as herdsmen imported from the Sahel region of West Africa should be continued and not stopped by any action of government in response to the unspeakable privation which the Islamic invaders have subjected Nigerians.

Nobody is deceived by the weird claim of the man and it is high time the federal government should stop pandering to the brazen-faced lawlessness and brigandage of foreign invaders, terrorists and the socalled "ISWAP, bandits and criminals" who have left the sinister impression that they have overwhelmed the security agencies in Nigeria and can retain the vast lands and villages they have occupied having mindlessly slaughtered the indigenous population ostensibly to populate the places with Moslems.

Fact remains that cattle rearing is a private business and must be seen as that by the past and present conniving occupants of Aso Villa who unfortunately has not seen the need to flush out the foreign invaders masquerading as herdsmen.

Whether it is 5 or 95 percentage of ownerships of cows in the country, the owners should establish ranches OR merge to establish ranches because Nigeria is not in the medieval age to tolerate primitive so-called "Nomadic culture of open grazing of cattle".

That is why the sponsors of the mindless slaughtering of indigenous people and kidnapping stridently kicked against Restructuring the lopsided Federation with decentralized security architecture. Of course they know that if it takes place, the state governments will make laws against open grazing and compel cattle owners to purchase lands and establish ranches.

This is the only fear because it will truncate their dream Islamization agenda and Islamic theocracy; don't mind the various names viz: Boko Haram, bandits, criminals, ISWAP, etc because they are all with one agenda to islamize the country and make the homeless nomads in the sub Saharan Africa to have Nigeria as their dwelling place hence the alleged promise of the former president Buhari to this effect.

These sponsors of terrorism disguised as herdsmen know that ranching cattle is far better than the primitive practice of open grazing. Other countries of the world have migrated from open grazing and made it a Law to have ranches which have better breed of cattle in addition to money yielding value chains that contribute to the country’s GDP. They know that; what is behind their devious posturing is the Islamization agenda, point-blank.
