In a bid to restore order and decency in Awka's three arm zone, the Anambra State Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) in collaboration with Anambra State Police Command has launched a sensitization campaign for Tricycle riders and traders.
Tricycle riders and street
traders are advised to use designated parks and market for loading and
unloading passengers and buying and selling respectively, instead of conducting
their business in the area that housed the State Assembly Complex, Government
House, State and Federal Secretariat, and the Federal High Court.
Addressing Journalists in Awka,
during the sensitization exercise, the
Anambra State Police Command through her representative, Mr. Vena Leelea, a
Divisional Police Officer (DPO) B division warned drivers against the blockage
of roads at Aroma and other places in the state. He advised the group on the
importance of maintaining law and order in the state capital while conducting
their transportation business.
On his part, the managing director, ACTDA, Mr. Ossy Onuko, stated that the Agency efforts to restore order in Awka include daily enforcement to protect lives and property.
Mr. Onuko who was represented
by the Deputy Commander of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA)
Mr. Ukachukwu Okonkwo, stressed that the heart of Awka must be free from street
trading and roadside sales to prevent accidents. He assured that their work
would continue into the night, urging citizens to adhere to designated trading
areas.
In his remarks, the Coordinator
of Keke Drivers in Anambra and Recover Nigeria Project Comrade Osita Obi
commended the police and ACTDA for taking up the challenges of securing the
capital city for good.
According to him, Aroma-Awka
was a peculiar place that needs special attention, noting that all arms of the
state government are located around Aroma and needed to be properly guarded.
He however said that those
creating problems at Aroma are not the drivers but group of cultists in Awka.
He called on the police to take
Special note of these boys who are bent on creating problems around Aroma as
they don’t go into the park but prefer to load on the roads therefore obstructing
traffic and free movement.
He pleaded with the DPO to take
Special note of these menace and mobilize his men adequately to tackle them.
“We don’t want anybody dead, we
want Awka to be clean decent and calm. I got a report this morning that these
boys came to park to force the drivers to pay money" he said.
