Operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have cordoned off the residence of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in Wuse, Abuja.
The EFCC's action comes shortly after the former governor's
meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House. The house, situated on
Benghazi Street in Wuse Zone 4, is currently inaccessible, with no movement
allowed in the vicinity.
A source provided a photograph showing EFCC operatives
barricading the access road to Bello's residence, stating, "EFCC
barricades Bello's house in Abuja. No movement in the area as EFCC barricaded
the house. They are yet to gain access."
While the reason for the EFCC's presence at the former
governor's residence is not immediately clear, it is speculated to be related
to the ongoing N84 billion fraud case against him.
In the amended charge, the EFCC accused Bello of diverting
N80 billion of state funds in September 2015, prior to assuming office. This
accusation is part of a broader case involving allegations of money laundering,
breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds totaling N84,062,406,089.88.
Bello's nephew, Ali Bello, along with Dauda Sulaiman and
Abdulsalam Hudu, are also co-accused in the case. While Ali Bello and Sulaiman
have pleaded not guilty to the charges, Bello and Hudu are reportedly still at
large.
The Kogi State Government has criticized the charges as
"ridiculous" and "laughable," arguing that Bello was not in
a position to access or misappropriate state funds before assuming office.
It was previously reported on the EFCC's legal actions
against Yahaya Bello, including dragging him before Justice James Omotosho of
the Federal High Court in Abuja.
