The President of the Students Union Government (SUG) at Anambra State College of Nursing Sciences (ASCONS) Nkpor, in the Department of Midwifery, Comrade Chidi Chuba, has appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State. He urged the governor to consider empowering final-year Midwifery students with 'Delivery kits' as part of his youth development program for Anambra residents.

The students also called on the Anambra State Government to address the institution's challenges with classrooms and accommodation. This request was presented during the Students' Week and Cultural Day celebration of the Department of Midwifery at ASCONS Nkpor in Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State.

Speaking at the event, Comrade Chidi Chuba praised Governor Soludo as a youth-friendly leader known for addressing challenges faced by Anambra residents, regardless of their origin. Chuba highlighted the need for adequate classrooms, especially considering the erosion damage to the existing 3 classroom blocks. He emphasized the importance of additional hostels to accommodate the increasing number of students at ASCONS.

Chuba acknowledged Governor Soludo's youth empowerment initiatives and appealed for the provision of 'Delivery packs' to empower final-year student midwives. This, he argued, would enable them to contribute to assisting pregnant women without solely relying on civil service jobs after graduation.

The Chairman of the ASCONS Students' Cultural Day celebration, Hon Barr. Ebuka Igwe, who represents Idemili South in the Anambra State House of Assembly, suggested that the challenges facing the school might be addressed in the 2024 budget.

Barr Ebuka Igwe also spoke on the significance of cultural programs, emphasizing the importance of embracing one's roots. He expressed pride in being an Igbo man and encouraged all Igbo indigenes to take pride in their culture.

The ASCONS Provost, Dr. Mrs. Juliana Nwazuruoke, encouraged parents to embrace culture, noting that cultural practices are essential aspects of people's way of life. She shared her experience of her late husband initiating their sons into the Ozo title, stressing the importance of cultural norms and values.

Ogbuefi Chukwuedeh Okwuchukwu Marshall and Chief Chukwunonso Mozie advised youths against prioritizing social media trends over Igbo cultural heritage. They emphasized the importance of communicating in native tongues, citing the proud examples of Hausas and Yorubas.

Rt Comrade Sebastine Okolo, the Assistant Director Utilities, SUG, and Vice President of the National Association of Nigerian Student Nurses and Midwives, South East Zone, recounted the series of activities during the Students' Week. The week included events such as Sunday Praise night, sports competitions, Costume day, Picnic, Magazine launching, cultural day, and the coronation of the new Igwe ASCONS Department of Midwifery.

The occasion also featured the unveiling and launching of the maiden student midwives departmental magazine and the presentation of awards for outstanding leadership to Hon Barr. Ebuka Igwe, Hon Kingsley Udemezue (Anambra State House of Assembly member representing Idemili North), and some ASCONS management/staff.

A notable highlight was the installation of Igwe Goodness Chinecherem Chuba (Agbalusiangene Otichamgbadaaji VII of ASCONS) and his Lolo Mmesoma Nwafor, who took over from His Majesty, Igwe Chidi Chuba (Igwe Chimereze VI of the Department of Midwifery, ASCONS).
