A collection of six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina's triumphant 2022 World Cup campaign is set to be auctioned in December, as announced by Sotheby's on Monday, with an estimated value of $10 million.
Messi adorned these shirts
during pivotal moments, including the group-stage clashes against Saudi Arabia
and Mexico, as well as subsequent matches against Australia, the Netherlands,
Croatia, and the final against France. Argentina's success in Qatar marked
Messi's crowning achievement after four previous World Cup attempts. Sotheby's
anticipates that if the jerseys exceed $10 million, it could become the most
valuable sports memorabilia collection ever auctioned.
The current record for an
individual jersey stands at $10.1 million, achieved by the sale of Michael
Jordan's 1998 NBA finals jersey last year. Auction houses increasingly
recognize the growing market for sports memorabilia. The jerseys, presented by
US tech startup AC Momento, which assists athletes in managing memorabilia
collections, will contribute a portion of the proceeds to the UNICAS Project,
benefiting a Barcelona children's hospital that aids kids with rare diseases.
The public can view the jerseys
for free during the auction preview from November 30 to December 14.
