Former President Muhammadu Buhari has voiced his observation that Nigerians exhibit a pronounced inclination towards materialism, creating challenges in garnering support during his presidential campaigns in 2003, 2007, and 2011.
In a retrospective interview
broadcast on Nigeria Television Authority, Buhari emphasized the nation's
inclination toward material wealth, often overlooking ethical considerations in
its pursuit. He noted the societal emphasis on riches, luxurious residences,
and extravagant lifestyles.
Reflecting on his unsuccessful
presidential bids, Buhari lamented the struggle to secure backing, attributing
it to the prevalent preference for material success over appreciation for
philanthropic initiatives. Despite securing the presidency in 2015, Buhari
acknowledged falling short of achieving all his intended objectives during his
tenure.
