Atiku Decries APC's 'Snatch, Grab, And Run' Approach As Detrimental To Democracy

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has once again sounded the alarm over alleged attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to undermine Nigeria's democracy through covert means.

Atiku, speaking through his Media Adviser, Mazi Paul Ibe, in a statement released in Abuja on Monday, expressed concern about the APC's alleged "snatch, grab, and run" agenda, which he believes poses a threat to the democratic process.

According to Atiku, democracy is not solely about representative government but is fundamentally rooted in the diversity of ideas. He emphasized that a truly democratic system must be open to accommodating opposition and opposing views.

"Sadly and suddenly, we have seen a trend whereby the range of opposition engagement continues to be narrowed by the ruling party in Nigeria," Atiku stated. He highlighted instances of alleged electoral rigging and judicial influence, claiming that these actions compromise the health of Nigeria's democracy.

Atiku pointed to controversial court decisions in opposition-controlled states, citing examples from Nassarawa, Kano, Zamfara, and Plateau State. He expressed concern that the judiciary appears to be favoring the ruling party, raising doubts about the integrity of the electoral and judicial systems.

The former Vice President drew attention to what he sees as a dangerous ideology of "snatch, grab, and run away with power" by the ruling party. He highlighted the ongoing Plateau governorship election petition as a confirmation of a threat made by an APC lawmaker in a viral video regarding the compromise of the judicial process.

Atiku called on individuals of good conscience to unite in the effort to rescue Nigeria's democracy from what he referred to as "buccaneering power grabbers." He also drew parallels with the situation in Lagos State, where opposition became marginalized under the influence of a prominent political figure.

The statement concluded with Atiku emphasizing the need for eternal vigilance to safeguard Nigeria's democracy from what he perceives as an APC onslaught on democratic principles and institutions designed to check the ruling party's excesses.
