Flood victims and vulnerable individuals in Anambra State have expressed their appreciation for the relief provided by the Federal Government, acknowledging its role in mitigating the economic challenges faced by citizens.
This commendation was resoundingly voiced in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, following the distribution of essential supplies by the Federal Government through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The relief efforts are a
response to the Special National Economic and Livelihood Emergency
Intervention, a government initiative designed to alleviate the adverse effects
of the removal of oil subsidies, which resulted in increased prices of goods
and services across the nation. The program also extends its assistance to
victims of the devastating 2022 floods that wreaked havoc in various parts of
the country, including Anambra State.
To identify and aid those
affected by the 2022 floods and the most vulnerable individuals in the state,
the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency
Management Agency (SEMA) undertook a comprehensive enumeration and verification
process between May and June of this year.
The beneficiaries of this
initiative lauded the government's efforts as commendable and expressed
optimism that it would alleviate the hunger and hardship they had been
enduring. Comrade Chigozie Agulu from Awkuzu in Oyi Local Government Area
praised NEMA and SEMA for their efficient distribution of the relief items and
emphasized that the recipients were deserving of this support.
Mr. Nnaemeka Ignatius from
Ogbaru Local Government Area expressed his excitement over the non-food items
received, noting that the pumping machine and chemicals would greatly benefit
his farming business, which had been severely affected by the floods.
Mrs. Comfort Udeozor
appreciated the Federal Government's concern for the people and advocated for
such gestures to be made a regular occurrence. Mrs. Christiana Ikechebelu, who
received a grinding machine, remarked that this was the first time in her life
to receive government-provided palliative items.
Dr. Anselem Onuorah, the
Transition Committee Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Area, thanked
both the Federal and State governments for transparently distributing materials
to vulnerable individuals and flood victims. He emphasized the significant
impact this assistance would have on the lives of the beneficiaries and urged
the government to further address the prevailing economic hardships faced by
the masses.
Igwe Christopher Nnegbuna, the
traditional ruler of Ebenebe in Awka North Local Government Area, praised the
government for empowering people with life-saving items and encouraged
recipients to utilize them for self-reliance.
Chief Paul Odenigbo, the
Executive Secretary of Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA),
encouraged the beneficiaries of agricultural crops and non-food items such as
grinding, sewing, and pumping machines to make effective use of these items to
meet their daily needs.
Mr. Olusegun Afolayan, the
Supervisor of the distribution exercise and Assistant Director of Planning,
Research, and Forecasting, noted that while the overwhelming crowd presented
challenges during the distribution, the process was seamless, ensuring that the
items reached the intended recipients. He appealed to the beneficiaries not to
sell the livelihood items but to use them for their intended purpose, as
provided by the Federal Government.
