The Anambra State Police Commamd has arrested two persons with a penchant for robbing travelers on the Second Niger Bridge, Onitsha.
The Command's Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, stated this in a statement to the media on Monday.
He noted that the arrest was made by officers from the Harbour Division and that the suspects' ages were 20 and 22, with one from Ebonyi State and the other from Enugu State.
According to the spokesperson, the arrest occurred during a surveillance patrol on the bridge aimed at preventing various forms of criminal activity, including the theft of construction materials.
The police received a tip about the gang's activities near the Obosi end of the bridge, leading to the covert police team monitoring and subsequently apprehending two of the gang members.
During a search, the officers recovered two daggers and five SIM cards taken from previously stolen phones from the suspects.
Regarding the incident, State Commissioner of Police CP Aderemi Adeoye commended the police team for their vigilance and bravery in facing the gang.
CP Adeoye also instructed the authorities to locate the owners of the recovered SIM cards in order to gather evidence for the successful prosecution of the arrested suspects, ensuring that the law is applied to its fullest extent in their case.
