The executions of these former Heads of state were dramatic events in Ghana’s history following the June 4, 1979, military uprising that brought Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings and the Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC) to power.
Lieutenant General Akwasi Amankwaa Afrifa
Lieutenant General Akwasi Amankwaa Afrifa (24 April 1936 – 26 June 1979) was the 3rd Head of state of Ghana. He was in office from 2nd April 1969 – 7th August 1970. He was also a farmer, traditional ruler, and politician.
Afrifa was arrested on his farm and on 26th
June 1979, executed by firing squad, together with General Fred Akuffo, also a
former head of state, and other senior military leaders. They were allegedly
found guilty of corruption, embezzlement, and using their positions to amass
wealth.
General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong
General Ignatius
Kutu Acheampong took over as the military head of state of Ghana. He was the 6th
Head of State of Ghana from 13th January 1972, until 5th July 1978, when he was
ousted in a palace coup by Lt. Gen. Frederick William Kwasi Akuffo. On 16th June
1979, Acheampong was court-martialed and executed along with General Edward
Kwaku Utuka by firing squad.

Lt. Gen.
Frederick William Kwasi Akuffo (21 March 1937 – 26 June 1979). He was the 7th
Head of State of Ghana, and served as Chairman of the ruling Supreme Military Council from 5th July 1978 – 4th June 1979. He was executed along with
other senior military officers on 26th June 1979 at the Teshie Military Range,
Accra.
