Why I didn’t join the army – Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, recently opened up about his childhood dream of becoming a soldier, during a sermon delivered at the church's monthly Thanksgiving Service. Despite his passion for the army, Adeboye's late mother did not allow him to join the military.

Addressing military, paramilitary, and other security forces present at the event, Adeboye cited 2 Timothy 2:3, where the Bible talks about "enduring hardness as a good soldier of Christ," and explained that he had always wanted to be a soldier, but his mother had denied him that opportunity.

Recounting his conversation with his mother after he graduated from university, Adeboye said, "I told her that I wanted to join the army after I graduated, and she said to me, 'You're my only son. I'm not asking you not to join the army, just wait till I die and you have buried me, then you can do whatever you want.'’

Adeboye went on to explain that, by the time his mother passed away in the 1990s, it was already too late for him to join the army. Nonetheless, he still loves the army and is fascinated by it. "Because I love the Army, I watched every film, cinema, anything that had to do with the military," he said.

Adeboye reminded everyone that the soldiers in fine uniforms had to endure a lot of hardship and overcome obstacles before they could wear those uniforms.

"You see them in beautiful dresses, they look nice, maybe you should check what goes on from the day they enlist till the day they begin to march in ceremonial dress, you will know what is called hardness, you will know what is called endurance," he added.
