NCC denies tracking, leaking Obi’s phone conversation with Oyedepo

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has vehemently denied allegations of tracking and leaking a phone conversation between Mr Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), and Pastor David Oyedepo, the General Overseer of Living Faith Church.

The leaked phone conversation, reportedly between Obi and Oyedepo, where Obi was purportedly soliciting Pastor Oyedepo's support to mobilize votes from South West and Kwara state, has stirred up controversy across the country.

However, the NCC has refuted any involvement in the alleged phone tracking and leakage. In a statement issued by its Director Public Affairs, Rueben Mouka, the NCC clarified that it does not and cannot track or leak telephone conversations of anyone, in accordance with the provisions of the Nigerian Communication Act (NCA) 2003 and other extant Laws of the Federation.

"The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been inundated with enquiries by the media on allegations of telephone 'tracking and leakage' made against the Commission by some individuals and groups in the social and alternative media. The Commission denies the allegations in their entirety," the statement read.

“The NCC has reported the allegations to relevant security agencies for proper investigation and necessary action, emphasizing its commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities to the Nigerian people in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the NCA 2003, and other extant Laws of the Federation, as well as global best practices.

"For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission denies these allegations and advises the public to disregard them," the statement concluded.

The NCC's denial comes amid widespread speculation and finger-pointing on social media regarding the leaked phone conversation.
