U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed deep
disappointment in Russian President Vladimir Putin over the ongoing war in
Ukraine and has sharply reduced the timeline for a ceasefire agreement.
Speaking to reporters at Turnberry, Scotland, following a bilateral meeting
with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump revealed that the original 50-day
deadline given to Russia to end hostilities has now been cut to just 10 to 12
days from Monday.
The unexpected tightening of the deadline reflects
growing U.S. frustration over the intensifying Russian attacks on Ukrainian
cities. Trump, who has previously described his relationship with Putin as
"cordial" and "respectful," appeared visibly agitated as he
addressed the press. “Despite our past conversations, some of them nice, nothing
has changed,” he said. “Civilians are still dying, and cities are still being
targeted. There’s no reason to wait any longer.”
Trump warned that failure to meet the revised
ceasefire deadline could result in a new wave of punitive measures, including
expanded economic sanctions and sweeping secondary tariffs. Under the proposed
measures, the U.S. would impose tariffs of up to 100% on imports from countries
continuing to do business with Russia. The move is intended to isolate Moscow
further on the global stage and force compliance through economic pressure.
The new stance signals a tougher pivot in Trump's
foreign policy, which has historically been more cautious when dealing with the
Kremlin. Analysts say the move may be intended to reassert American leadership
in global peace efforts, especially as Trump faces both international and
domestic pressure to address escalating global conflicts.
In the same address, Trump also touched on the
humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He announced that the United States would boost
aid efforts, ensuring the delivery of food and other essential supplies while
working to dismantle barriers that obstruct humanitarian access.
With tensions rising and the new ceasefire deadline
looming, global attention now turns to Moscow’s next move, and whether
President Putin will respond to the increasing diplomatic and economic
pressure.
