As part of efforts to provide university education opportunity for Nigerians, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has commissioned the BYU – Pathway (Brigham Young University), Worldwide Centre in Lagos.
Speaking
at the commissioning on Saturday, President of the BYU – Pathway Worldwide,
Brian Ashton, noted that the all-inclusive education provided by the centre is
affordable, qualitative and opportunity to bless lives.
Ashton,
informed that the centre is aimed at giving learning that will make people
skillful in order to be self-reliant, so that they can be useful to themselves,
families and the community at large.
He
said that while students study, they also have the opportunity of getting
remote jobs through which they earn income.
The
BYU – Pathway President revealed that some of the activities and services the
centre offers through the Pathway Connect programmes, are programmes where
students can earn degrees in various fields such as business, health and
technology.
According to him, BYU – Pathway Worldwide partners with Brigham Young University Idaho (BYU- Idaho) to offer online degree programmes adding that there are regular online gatherings that provide opportunities for students to connect with each other and their instructors.
Ashton,
maintained that BYU – Pathway Worldwide is a global higher education
organization that provides access to spiritually- based education for students
who are not only members of the church but everybody who qualifies.
Dedicating
the centre, Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Churchs Quorum of the Twelve
Apostles, praised Nigerians and Africans for their resilience and hardwork.
In
his remarks the Church’s Africa West Area Presidency, Elder Adeyinka Ojediran,
noted that the church values education and encourages all to be educated.
He
enjoined youths to avail themselves of the opportunity to get education.
Also
speaking, the Senior International Area Manager, Victor Ukorebi, said that the
study center is equipped with computers and internet facilities for students’
use for their online programmes.
While
saying that with less than N400,000, enrolled students can acquire degree
courses of four years.
Ukorebi,
mentioned that the centre has the capacity to have 500 students at a time.
