Renowned gospel artist Osinachi Kalu, professionally known as Sinach, has been taken to court by music producer Michael Oluwole, popularly called Maye, over an alleged copyright dispute. Maye has filed a N5 billion lawsuit against Sinach, claiming co-authorship of her 2016 hit song Way Maker.
In the case, registered as
FHC/L/CS/402/2024, Maye is seeking recognition as a co-author and co-owner of
the song, along with N5 billion in damages for alleged infringement of his
rights. Sinach has denied the allegations, asserting her sole authorship of the
track and highlighting her global recognition even before the release of Way
Maker.
The trial, which commenced at
the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, has been adjourned
to January 29 and 30, 2025.
