To President Tinubu: Time For Restructuring Lopsided Federation

By Polycarp Onwubiko

Daily Independent Editorial, October 4, 2024 has passionately advised president Tinubu to hearken to the nationwide clarion calls for Restructuring the lopsided Federation if he means well for the country.

It reads inter alia:

"There is no gainsaying that this newspaper has been in the vanguard of the agitation for restructuring Nigeria along the principles of federalism.

"We have consistently argued that for the country to regain its lost glory and join the league of developed economies of the world, a return to full-fledged federalism of the independence era is a sine qua non.

"Empirical evidence shows that this nation was better governed and on the path of an economic medium power before the brutal termination of the First Republic by the military on January 15, 1966.

"The present situation is not tolerable. The present unitary structure disguised as federalism, where all roads lead to Abuja, is not sustainable. This is the time to restructure Nigeria.

"The centre should concern itself only with core federal issues like defence, external affairs, currency and customs while each state or region should ‘eat what it kills’ under a proper (fiscal) federalism".

***My comment:

Igbo proverb says: "The mouth that regularly warns will continue to warn; but the ear that should listen, would always close its ears".

Patriotic exhortations have been consistent in advancing pragmatic panacea to restore the glory of Nigeria for the overall benefits of all the ethnic nationalities but a particular section of the country have vowed that its selfish calculations must be acceptable by other ethnic nationalities; and pigheadedness is the cause of all the monstrousities and abominable happenings in the name of political leadership in Nigeria.

The first and foremost responsibility of government the world over is maximum security. Much was obtained in the First Republic with the realistic principles of federal system of government. To be fair to the military regime which came in to quell the socioeconomic inferno that was about to destroy the country, it SUSPECT the Federal (Independence) Constitution.

To the consternation of the Southerners especially, the military autocrats teleguided by a section of the country, having seen the selfish benefits of the Military s Centralized Governance to their areas, stridently kicked against Restructuring the lopsided Federation which is simply to return the country to the pre-war realistic federal system of government; nothing more, nothing less, as it were.

The covert design to kick against Restructuring is simply to fastrack the dream Islamization agenda, with the terrorists masquerading as herdsmen, as the foot soldiers who, by the so-called "Fulani cultural heritage of open grazing" have colonized all the forests and jungles throughout the country (don't mind the so-called 'bandits and cried, ISWAP, ANSARU , Boko Haram deliberately left to inhabit the so-called "ungoverned spaces", preparatory for the takeoff of the Islamization age long Islamic project.
