Scrap NYSC: Insecurity, Inflation, and Government Neglect Worsen Plight of Graduates

By Polycarp Onwubiko

NYSC should be scrapped forthwith because of so many crippling factors like crass insecurity and runaway inflation causing unspeakable privation to them.

Government all over the world is meant for intelligent and proactive people. It is unfortunate that upon the unspeakable privation and threat to lives all over the country, the federal government has insisted on carrying on with the National Youths Service Scheme, NYSC program.

The initiative started in 1973 has dramatically outlived its usefulness and has to be scrapped while the staff deployed to MDAs.

Insecurity has decimated graduate students in many parts of the country; and sadly after graduation, they are still subjected to insecurity dangers because of deliberate failure of the federal government to decentralize security architecture because of the opposition from the Core North political and traditional chieftains who cherished Centralized security architecture to enable terrorists masquerading as herdsmen to be free in mindlessly slaughtering indigenous population while the supposed Nigerian police look away unperturbed.

The most agonizing factor is that the NYSC members are not paid adequately hence the unspeakable privation and living in slums and getto to survive the one year unnecessary ordeal in the name of service to the father land. It is a mark of irresponsible governance that since 1973 when the scheme was established, the federal government could not provide housing program for the members in every community or at least in each of the local government headquarters with security.

It sheer naivity to abandon the fresh graduates to fend for themselves in areas where they are strangers and more often than not, hostile environmental and people. During Buhari frantic quest for presidency, scores of NYSC members were killed by the blind followers of the confirmed dictator who let Nigeria in this horrible socio economic situation.

The N77,000 recently approved by president Tinubu for the NYSC members is a mockery of human management. How can a responsible Government look away from the plight of the NYSC members who are not provided with living quarters, food, secure places of abode, and transportation to their places of assignments?

Our leaders travel abroad and see how such national programmes are provided for to motivate the participants proud of their country. Sorry for Nigeria.
