A Punch Editorial titled "Oronsaye Report Achievable" on September 10, 2024, criticized President Tinubu's administration for seemingly abandoning the Oronsaye Report, which recommended the merger of MDAs to save over N270 billion being siphoned by officials.
The incisive editorial stated, inter alia: "The outcome of
this presidential negligence is that MDAs have risen to 1,316 from the 161
recommended by the Oronsaye Committee.
The Federal Civil Service is a burden to the country." With an estimated population of 720,000, it is taking an unfair share of Nigeria’s treasury. A sum of N4.12 trillion was allocated for their salaries and emoluments in 2024. Their contributions to national development are grossly disproportionate to the allocations." The civil service is plagued by corruption, bureaucracy, nepotism, inefficiency, and the ‘ghost worker’ syndrome."
Comment: Anyone hoping that the
lopsided federation will be restructured to reinvent true fiscal federalism
might as well find other pastimes and forget about Nigeria, where ideal
governance is unlikely to come to fruition. The current wobbling style of
governance will certainly continue, as it aligns with the preferences,
venality, and selfish calculations of the Caliphate oligarchy holding the
country by the jugular.
