A South African man, Sabelo Mazibulo was tragically shot dead shortly after after burying his friend in KwaCeza, outside Ulundi in northern KwaZulu-Natal. His friend had been killed during a robbery, and Sabelo had bravely attempted to recount the horrific events to the bereaved family, who unjustly blamed him for the tragedy.
Cebo
Mazibuko, Sabelo's elder brother, expressed profound sorrow and confusion over
the senseless killing. "My brother was an innocent person. I want to
understand why he was killed. It happened exactly after he gave his account of
what happened the night his friend was killed. Sabelo explained to those
present that his friend was a victim of the ongoing conflict between the people
from Ulundi, Nongoma, Mahlabathini, and Umsinga," he stated.
Cebo
elaborated that Sabelo had narrowly escaped the initial shooting by fleeing for
his life. The family had hoped that by sharing his firsthand account, Sabelo
could help bring closure to the bereaved family. "We don’t understand why
they killed him. We were not aware that some people thought that Sabelo had a
hand in his friend's murder. What we know is that he survived the shooting
because he managed to run for his life when they were being attacked. We
thought the family would find closure if he told his side of the story, given
that he was present when the incident occurred," Cebo said.
The
KwaZulu-Natal South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Colonel Robert
Netshiunda, confirmed Sabelo's death and indicated that a case has been opened.
Investigations are currently underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding
this tragic and violent act.
The
community is left reeling from the shock of losing two young lives in such a
short span. This incident highlights the devastating impact of ongoing violence
and the urgent need for peace and justice. As the investigation continues,
Sabelo’s family and the community at large hope for clarity and justice,
emphasizing the importance of addressing the root causes of such conflicts to
prevent further tragedies.
