Since January 30, 2024, the federal government empaneled a 37-members tripartite Committee to advise it on realistic salaries and allowances for the Nigerian workers with respect to the prevailing inflationary trends ravaging the entire landscape of the country.
It is very shameful and
lamentable that up till today, the Committee has not made the expected
recommendations or might have done that but the federal government pretends
that the discussion is still ongoing.
One glaring fact that Nigerians
should acknowledge is that implementation of realistic living wage (no longer
minimum wage) in Nigeria today will NOT be possible unless the federal
government hearkens to the age long clarion calls for a REVIEW OF STATUTORY
REVENUE SHARING THE which will reflect the Federal Constitution as against the
pseudo federal arrangements bequeathed by the misbegotten Military Regime.
Fact remains that the over 52
percent share to the federal government in the Revenue Sharing Formula has to
be drastically reduced so that the state governments will have more percent to
tackle critical infrastructures like roads, power, education, healthcare, among
other responsibilities which sub national governments carry out in a Federal
arrangements.
Added to that, the imperative
of decentralized security architecture makes it mandatory for a Review of
Statutory Revenue sharing formula so that the state governments will adequately
fund the police given the stark reality that security is a top priority in
ensuring good governance anywhere in the world. President Tinubu should
acknowledge the fact that sticking to the fundamentally and fraudulentlly
flawed federal arrangements undergirded by the useless 1999 Military Decreed
Constitution and the extant Revenue Sharing Formula will continue to worsen the
socioeconomic growth and development of the entire landscape of the country.
Restructuring the lopsided
Federation is a categorical imperative if Tinubu really wants to have his name
etched in the hall of Fame on the political leadership of Nigeria.
