Dr.
Chioma Agbasimelo, the Head of the Mass Communication Department at Nnamdi
Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, shared this insight with newsmen during a
press briefing at the university. She emphasized the department's commitment to
student development and academic excellence at UNIZIK.
Dr.
Agbasimelo said many students from department graduate without a clear idea of
their specialization. “In response, the department initiated a Career
Development Summit. Its purpose? To enlighten students about the significance
of choosing a specialization within Mass Communication. This event aims to
guide them in identifying and embracing the specific area they're passionate
about.
“By
emphasizing the importance of this decision, the summit empowers students to
make informed choices about their academic and professional paths. Ultimately, it
seeks to equip them with the clarity and confidence needed to pursue their
passions and thrive in their chosen field of Mass Communication.”
She stated that many Nigerian universities are gradually unbundling their Mass Communication Departments and that the Mass Communication Department of UNIZIK will soon undergo this transformation.
“Despite
offering various specialties, students often lack clear specialization goals.
To address this, the department will bring experts from different Mass
Communication fields to educate students. This initiative aims to encourage
students to identify and pursue their specific areas of interest, ensuring they
receive comprehensive education and guidance in their chosen fields within Mass
Communication.
“During
this summit, we aim to convey to students the importance of selecting a
specialization from their first year. Many students may not have the
opportunity to belong to the Faculty of Media and Communication Study, which
houses numerous departments slated for unbundling. Through the insights shared
by our invited speakers, we seek to enlighten all students about the
significance of early specialization and its relevance to their academic
journey,’’ she said.
Dr.
Agbasimelo noted that many Mass Communication graduates perceive Mass
Communication as an effortless course, merely completing it to obtain a degree.
This perception often leads them to engage in various endeavors
post-graduation, reflecting a broader misunderstanding of the field's
complexity and the skills required for success within it.
The
‘Career Development Summit of Mass Communication Department Nnamdi Azikiwe
University Awka is slated for 25th April, 2024 at University Auditorium. The
event will feature notable speakers and sessions aimed at guiding students
toward successful careers in media and communication.
