In a book titled "Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser, Media and Publicity (2015 – 2023)," former President Buhari has clarified his decision not to dismiss the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, amidst speculations about Emefiele's presidential ambitions.
Emphasizing that Emefiele never
discussed these ambitions with him, Buhari's perspective is unveiled in a book
written by his former Special Adviser, Femi Adesina. The memoir was presented
in Abuja on Tuesday, January 16.
The book also articulates
Buhari's defense of the Naira redesign policy implemented by Emefiele during
his administration, asserting that it contributed to a clean general election
in 2023. According to Buhari, those critical of the policy were individuals
with excessive wealth.
In the 12th chapter of the
book, Buhari is quoted saying, "The scarcity of money was not deliberately
done to punish Nigerians. Democracy allows people to express their will, and we
did not attempt to control them." Reflecting on electoral dynamics in his
home state, Katsina, he shares insights into the 2023 elections, emphasizing
that people do not appreciate being taken for granted.
On his decision regarding
Emefiele, Buhari explained, "I met Emefiele in office when I came, and
unless there was firm evidence against him, it would be unfair and an act of
injustice to remove him, acting on hearsay." He stressed the importance of
evidence before taking punitive actions and underscored his commitment to fairness.
Addressing Emefiele's alleged
involvement in the 2023 presidential campaign, Buhari revealed, "When he
was linked with the campaign for the 2023 presidency, I did not ask him because
he told nobody he was getting involved. Otherwise, I would have removed him and
told the nation why."
The book concludes with Buhari
discussing the impact of the naira redesign policy on elections, addressing
criticisms, and expressing his refusal to judge others by his own standards.
Buhari emphasized his consciousness of fairness and his commitment to
conducting himself with a clear conscience.
