Ukraine’s Security Service is being implicated in a series of explosions on two trains along a crucial rail route in eastern Russia this week, according to a Ukrainian defense source on Friday.
The initial blast occurred on Wednesday along the Baikal-Amur railway as the train traversed the Bessolov Severomuyskiy tunnel in Buryatia, located in the eastern Siberia region bordering Mongolia, the source said.
Following the rerouting of train traffic due to the first incident, the Ukrainian Security Service allegedly targeted a second train on Thursday as it crossed Devil’s Bridge in the vicinity, the source claimed. Both explosions reportedly resulted from planted explosive devices, as per the source.
"The Russians have fallen into the SBU’s trap twice," the source asserted, using the acronym for the Ukrainian Security Service. The twin bombings were characterized as a "special operation to disable this important railroad."
The source explained, "The first freight train exploded directly in the Severomuyskiy tunnel. To maintain the traffic, the Russians began using a detour route through the Devil’s Bridge. This is exactly what the SBU was counting on: as the train was passing over this high 35-meter bridge, the implanted explosive devices detonated."
While Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility, and the Ukrainian Security Service has not commented officially, CNN cannot independently verify the reported explosions.
Russia referred to the Wednesday incident as a "cargo train fire" and has not labeled it an attack or attributed blame to Ukraine. No official comments have been made by Russian authorities regarding the second incident
The Ukrainian source alleged that the Russians utilize the railroad for "military logistics" and emphasized the route's significance as "the only major railroad connection between Russia and China." The targeted trains were said to be transporting fuel.
After the initial explosion, the rail provider reported assessing the damage, with no casualties reported. The East Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the absence of casualties in the first incident.
In a statement, the prosecutor’s office mentioned coordinating with law enforcement and supervisory authorities in the area, noting that Russian authorities would take responsive measures based on the inspection's results.
Following the first incident,
Russian authorities confirmed the organization of train traffic on a detour
route with a slight increase in travel time.
