Crying About Infrastructure Deficit In Nigeria

By Polycarp Onwubiko

It would be wishful thinking to expect that the national infrastructure deficit can be substantially addressed under the prevailing unitary-federal contraption, backed by the equally contrived 1999 Constitution, supposedly under amendments, ostensibly to favor a section of the country.

The stunning reality is that President Tinubu must choose between immediately restructuring the lopsided federation or directing a review of the statutory revenue-sharing formula to allow state governments to have over 70 percent of the statutory revenue allocations. This way, they can begin tackling the infrastructure deficit.

There is no denying the fact that infrastructure drives sustainable socioeconomic growth and development. It does not pay to be pigheaded in confronting the stark reality of restructuring Nigeria's dysfunctional federalism, which is the only pragmatic roadmap for good governance and will reduce the multidimensional poverty plaguing Nigerians.
