The Grammys' organizers, the Recording Academy, have asserted that within the realm of Afrobeats and the broader African music scene, no artist surpasses Nigerian vocalist Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy.
This statement was issued in a
release on the Academy's website, lauding Burna Boy and his fellow nominees in
the newly introduced Best African Music Performance category at the 2024
Grammys. The Grammys acknowledged Burna Boy's prominence, stating that he is
"firmly in his imperial era," having collaborated with "global
stars such as Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber."
They recognized his achievement
of securing his first UK No. 1 album this year with "the classic hip-hop
influenced I Told Them…," featuring contributions from 21 Savage, J. Cole,
RZA, and GZA. According to the Academy, "There’s not a bigger star in
Afrobeats, or even the whole of Africa itself, than Burna Boy,"
emphasizing his two consecutive Best Global Album GRAMMY nods for "Twice
as Tall" and "African Giant" and his collaborations with global
icons.
Burna Boy's track 'City Boys' received a
nomination in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category, competing
with other notable releases. The artist also earned nominations in three
additional categories: 'Sitting On Top of the World' featuring 21 Savage – Best
Melodic Rap, 'I Told Them' – Best Global Music Album, and 'Alone' – Best Global
Music Performance.
