The All Progressives Congress (APC) has contested the final result of the Bayelsa State governorship election, wherein the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party the winner.
Dennis Otiotio, the state APC
agent, refused to sign the result sheets, alleging that over 84,000 votes
secured by the APC were unfairly voided. Otiotio claimed collusion between INEC
and the ruling PDP, stating, "Over 84,000 votes scored by the APC in Nembe
and Southern Ijaw were cancelled."
He emphasized the discrepancy,
asserting that if the nullified votes were considered, the APC would have
triumphed. Otiotio, the state APC chairman, confirmed the submission of a
petition challenging the collation process, expressing confidence in INEC's
conscientious review within the stipulated seven days.
In response to anticipated
actions, he explained, "Well, the Electoral Act allows INEC to review the
results within seven days, and we have written the necessary petition,
believing that INEC in good conscience will look at our petition and deal with
it accordingly." Diri secured victory with 175,196 votes, surpassing
Timipre Sylva of the APC with 110,108 votes and the Labour Party with 905
votes.
