The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is seeking collaboration with the media to prevent and combat corruption in Anambra State. The agency will not relent in its core duty among others which is to prevent and fight public sector corruption that has been one of the banes of development in Nigeria.
Mr. Godwin Oche, Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner for
the Anambra State ICPC office, stated this during the May congress of the
Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Anambra Council held at Godwin Ezeemo Int'l
Press Centre, Awka.
Mr. Oche, represented by Inalegwu Shaibu, officer-in-charge
of Public Enlightenment and Education, stated that corruption has eaten deep
into the society and thus the best way to salvage the situation is by
preventing and combating it. He said fighting corruption in a developing nation
like Nigeria remains a work in progress, “The ubiquitous litany of woes of
corruption on our moral, social-economic and national development is very
alarming.”
“The agency has reviewed Ministries, Departments and
Agencies (MDA’s) on Open portal for compliance with Government Integrated
Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) and Treasury Single Account
(TSA). While 426 MDAs reviewed Personnel Costs. So far it has conducted 410
corruption monitoring activities in MDAs. On Holistic System Study And
Corruption Risk, it has conducted 73 assessments and had 1,063 MDAs assessed on
Ethics and Integrity Compliance Scorecard.”
“We have achieved a lot within the few months we have been
in Anambra state, and that includes visits to major institutions and holding
training sessions. Systems visit is a duty we undertake to institutions without
informing them, to look at their operations and also advise them on what
entails corruption and what does not,” he said.
He emphasised that addressing this issue requires the active involvement of the media as the fourth estate of the realm, urging them to join the collective effort in eradicating this menace.
Responding, the Chairman of NUJ, Anambra State Council,
Odogwu Emeka Odogwu Ph.D. who was represented by the vice chairman of the
council, Comrade Ngozi Obileri while thanking the ICPC officials for finding time to be with Anambra journalists,
assured of journalists' readiness to collaborate the anti-graft agency in the
fight against corruption in Nigeria.
