The Nigerian government has criticized Western nations for harboring the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group that has been declared a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government.
Information Minister Lai Mohammed made the
accusations during official engagements with international media organizations
and policy institutes in Washington, DC.
Mohammed alleged that Western countries were
supporting IPOB to destabilize Nigeria. "They allow them to raise funds,
some allow them to lobby their Congressmen and lawmakers and whatever fund they
realize, they use it to destabilize the country," he said.
The information minister added that it was
hypocritical for Western countries to claim they were fighting terrorism while
supporting a terrorist organization.
During his visit to the United States,
Mohammed also called on foreign media organizations to exercise caution in
reporting social media stories related to Nigeria's 2023 elections. He urged
them to be critical and scrutinize the information they receive before
reporting it on their platforms.
Mohammed is in Washington to engage with
international media organizations and think tanks on the just-concluded 2023
polls.
