The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing on an Appeal filed by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu against the government of President Muhammadu Buhari till May 11, 2023.
Kanu, who is being tried on terrorism-related
charges by the Federal Government of Nigeria, had on November 3, 2022,
approached the apex court, to challenge the decision of the appellate court,
which on 28 October 2022 stayed the execution of its earlier order acquitting
him of all charges and directing his release from the custody of the Department
of State Services (DSS).
While the Supreme Court had earlier slated a
hearing on the appeal for Thursday, 27th April, Aloy Ejimakor, the Special
Counsel for IPOB and Kanu, in a tweet, said the apex court has adjourned its
hearing.
“Sadly, the Supreme Court has adjourned the
#MNK appeal hearing to next month”, the tweet read.
Prior to the hearing, Kanu’s Special Counsel
had urged the Supreme Court to ensure justice in the trial of the IPOB leader,
stressing that his matter should end today.
Commenting on the case in a statement he
personally signed, Ejiofor said the Supreme Court judges ordered parties
involved to “ensure that every process incidental to the Appeal is filed within
a specified timeline given to parties”.
His statement reads: “Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi
Kanu’s case was the first to be mentioned on the cause list at the Supreme
Court today, and as usual, our erudite Lead Counsel – Prof. Mike Ozekhome was
hands-on to deliver the argument on behalf of our defence team.
“All pending applications capable of
affecting the expeditious hearing of the Appeal were disposed today. His
Lordships, proceeded to grant only two weeks adjournment for the hearing of the
substantive Appeal.
“Parties were directed to ensure that every
process incidental to the Appeal is filed within a specified timeline given to
parties, and the Appeal was consequently adjourned to the 11th day of May 2023
for Hearing.
“We shall keep Ezigbo UmuChineke abreast of
every development as we progress.
“Thank you all and remain blessed. We move!”
