Messi, the World Cup winner and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) player, is reportedly set to leave PSG this summer after contract negotiations failed to progress.
Messi, who joined PSG in 2021 on a two-year contract
with an option for a third year, has yet to agree to a contract extension with
the French club, and his current contract is set to end this season.
During
the World Cup in Qatar last winter, where Messi led Argentina to victory, his
father reportedly indicated to PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi that Lionel had
agreed to stay.
However, French outlet L'Equipe reports that
Messi and the club are "close to divorce" after recent negotiations
pushed both parties further apart.
Messi, who is 35 years old, has been linked
with a move back to Barcelona, where he spent his entire career before joining
PSG.
It is believed that PSG is requesting Messi
take a 25 percent pay cut on his £25.6 million-a-year contract due to the
club's issues with complying with Financial Fair Play regulations.
