The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has accused the newly elected governor of the state, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, of being responsible for the recent surge in the number of killer herdsmen in the state.
According to a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary,
Nathaniel Ikyur, Ortom alleged that Father Alia is using the guise of the
church to inflict more harm on the fertile lands of Benue.
Ortom expressed his concern over the ruthless
nature of the killer herdsmen, who have been terrorizing his people. He
clarified that he did not exclude the Fulani people from the state, but it was
the killer herdsmen who took advantage of Alia's victory to disrupt the peace
of the state. The Governor revealed that there has been an alarming increase in
the number of Benue people being killed by these herdsmen in recent times.
Ortom emphasized that ever since Father Alia became governor-elect, the herdsmen have been killing more people in Benue. He suspects that their intention is to use the face of the church to cause more destruction on the fertile lands of Benue.
The Governor believes that Father
Alia's success or failure will have a significant impact on the church,
depending on how he balances the interests of his sponsors and the safety of
Benue lands from the bloodthirsty herdsmen.
