Buhari promises orderly handover
Nigerian President-elect Bola Tinubu paid a thank-you visit to President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina state.
For the purpose of the visit, Tinubu said: “I
came to present him (Buhari) with a certificate of return as party leader and to commend his efforts in
supporting democracy in Africa.
“It is the largest demo
cracy in Africa and it
could not have done better. We are
fortunate that there was no crash, no accident, and however provocative the
defeat may be, we still have to tolerate it because we are Democrats and we are
trying to build a nation.
He described Buhari as a loyal party leader
who was willing and committed to a peaceful transition of power.
“Good,
calm and hardworking, and the fact that after the vote he once again taught us
devotion to our party by showing his ballot papers, his loyalty to the party
and his desire to create a future for us all create, has shown.
"And no matter how tempting the question
of democracy is, go through the process, build a successor and prepare for a
peaceful transfer, you know, in Africa, it's a big deal, you know", added
Tinubu.
The former Lagos state governor said he had
received countless congratulations from world leaders, including French
President Emmanuel Macron.
Buhari had earlier assured Nigerians that he
would work closely with Tinubu's team to ensure an "orderly transfer of
power". He also urged victims to
lodge their complaints “in the courts, not in the streets”.
