Denola Grey, a well-known Nigerian content creator, actor and fashion consultant, has expressed his condemnation for the alarming rate of electoral violence that took place during last Saturday's Gubernatorial and State of House of Assembly elections in most parts of Lagos State.
Grey's frustration and disappointment are evident in his recent Twitter post,
where he announced that he no longer wishes to be friends with anyone who
openly expresses support for the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress
(APC).
In his tweet, Grey stated that it is
only people who know they don't deserve to win something that will lie, steal,
cheat, and be violent to get it. He added that if one's house is clean, it's
essential to put their best foot forward and hope that the outcome is
beneficial to the people they claim to care about.
He also emphasized that there is no room for
neutrality in this situation because this is blatant evil, and anyone who
supports the APC is complicit. Denola Grey's outrage stemmed from the fact that
some politicians in Lagos State resorted to violence and thuggery to win
elections, which is entirely unacceptable in a democratic society.
Recall that Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw
also took to social media to report a similar incident where Rasheedat Adu, the
chairman of Eti-Osa local government, allegedly tried to use her thugs to
intimidate her during the election.
Henshaw, who was at her polling unit
during the Lagos state governorship election, claimed that the politician came
to rile the people in the local government against her and issued instructions
in Yoruba to her thugs. She further added that some people were chanting slogans,
and one of Adu's men threatened to slap her while another pointed at her from a
distance.
She also insinuated that the politician
probably tried to intimidate her because she got told off during the
presidential election.
Grey and Henshaw's reactions to
the recent electoral violence in Lagos State highlight the need for peaceful
and credible elections in Nigeria. Electoral violence and thuggery have become
common occurrences in Nigerian elections, which is a significant threat to
democracy and good governance in the country.
The government and the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) must take appropriate measures to ensure free,
fair, and peaceful elections in the country. It is crucial to create a
conducive environment for citizens to exercise their civic duties without fear
or intimidation. Only then can Nigeria make progress towards building a stable
and prosperous democratic society.
