- 178 LGAs, FCT will take it the hardest
With heavy rains already being reported in some communities, Nigerians have been warned to prepare for severe flooding in various parts of the country. Mustapha Ahmed, chief executive of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), warned during his presentation at the 2023 Climate-Related Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Strategy in Abuja yesterday.
Revealing that the Nigerian Meteorological
Agency (NiMet) has provided seasonal weather forecasts and annual flood
forecasts, Ahmed said the eye-popping flood disaster of 2022 prompted the
agency to send out an early warning across the country to avoid a repeat of
last year's disaster.
According to Ahmed, the meeting will also
focus on the development of vulnerability and risk maps to provide guidance to
avoid a repeat of last year's severe floods.
“We started early this year because we are
prepared to give early warning and early action. We will bombard every citizen,
state and local government with this information because we want them to know
that this is serious business. We won't be silent. We want them to know that
there will be flooding this year," he said.
Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA)
Director-General Clement Nze said more than 178 LGAs in 32 states and the
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are expected to experience severe flooding in
2023.
“This time we issued this prediction early and
await action from stakeholders, governments and individuals. We expect action
to be taken fairly soon, particularly at the sub-national level, to mitigate
the impact of the flooding in the country,” he said.
