Labour Party (LP) vice-presidential candidate has revealed that his party plans to contest the victory of Congress of All Progressives (APC) presidential candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the February 25 presidential election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) announced on Wednesday that Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives
Congress (APC) is the winner of the Feb. 25 presidential election.
INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu, who
announced the results, said the former Lagos governor won a total of 8,794,726
votes, beating his closest rival and People's Democratic Party (PDP)
presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who won 6,984, 520 votes, and defeated
Peter Obi of the Labor Party, who received 6,101,533 votes.
New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP)
presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso finished fourth with a total of
1,496,687 votes.
However, in a press conference in Abuja on
Wednesday, Baba-Ahmed said the elections did not meet the minimum standards of
the Electoral Law (2022).
“Our
position is that the alleged outcome does not meet the minimum criteria for a
transparent, free and fair election, barring the most deplorable attacks, voter
intimidation and repression.
"Rest assured of our determination to
fight the injustice perpetrated against the Nigerian people by all legal and
peaceful means.
“We beseech you all to remain calm and
peaceful as our struggle and resolve for a new Nigeria is just beginning. We
also encourage you all to continue campaigning and vote overwhelmingly for
Labor in the upcoming gubernatorial and general elections on 11th March. Our
director, Mr. Peter Obi, will address you and the nation in due course.
“We also urge Nigerians to continue
exercising their civic responsibilities in the upcoming elections. I said that
democracy belongs to those who know how to practice it. The only language we
know is peace. If Nigerians want peace through peaceful protest, then so be it,’’
he said.
