The Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Orji Kalu, has announced his interest in the presidency of the Senate, stating that it is his turn to lead the upper legislative chamber.
Kalu, who
was re-elected to represent Abia North in the Senate, is optimistic about his
chances of securing the position based on the fact that his party, the All
Progressives Congress, won a majority of seats in the recent election.
Despite
being under prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over
alleged embezzlement, Kalu remains focused on his ambition to lead the Senate,
promising to work for the benefit of Nigeria if elected.
He stated,
“It is my turn to become the Senate President. If I’m elected Senate President,
I will be team Nigeria. I’m going to work in every corner of Nigeria."
Kalu went on to express his commitment to the country, noting that he had
studied in Maiduguri, Borno State and started his business in Lagos, spreading
it across all state capitals.
Kalu also
emphasized his accessibility, promising to maintain his personal phone number
to answer all calls, even as Senate President. He urged Nigerians to pray for
him to secure the position, as he believes it is his turn.
Other
senators from the All Progressives Congress eyeing the Senate presidency have
been lobbying their colleagues for support, including Godswill Akpabio (Akwa
Ibom), Sani Musa (Niger), Barau Jibrin (Kano), and Dave Umahi (Ebonyi).
However, Kalu remains optimistic about his chances of securing the position and
is determined to work for the betterment of Nigeria if elected.
