Christiana Atsupie Twasam, the twin of Christian Atsu Twasam, has sorrowfully pleaded for God’s strength to journey on in life after losing her dearest twin brother following the devastating earthquake that rocked Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6, 2023, that brought untold grief to the family of a former Black Stars’ influential player.
Christian Atsu was only 31 years old and was
a winger at Turkey’s Hatayspor FC when the disaster occurred a day after he
scored his first goal for the side. He was found dead after 12 days in the
rubble, and his passing broke the hearts of Ghanaians and the football
community who have since celebrated him with tributes extolling his beautiful
nature and benevolence.
At a State Memorial Service in Accra before
his burial on Friday, Atsupie Twasam poured out her heart in a touching tribute
to her brother. She spoke of him as the love of her life, her role model, and
her husband. Atsu had a mother’s heart, and whenever he said, ‘Atsupie it is
okay, just overlook it, it’s nothing,’ it was comforting. Atsu’s passing has
left a permanent scar, and she prayed for strength to overcome the pain and to
continue with his good deeds.
Christian Atsu’s state funeral was attended
by hundreds of mourners, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. His
passing has left a void in the hearts of many Ghanaians, especially in the
football community where he had played for clubs such as Everton, Chelsea, and
Newcastle. He had 65 caps for the Black Stars of Ghana where he scored 10 goals
with nine assists.
One of his career highlights with the senior
national team was when he received the Best Player award and Best Goal of the
2015 Africa Cup of Nations, in Equatorial Guinea. He played a pivotal role in
helping Ghana reach the final stage of the tournament.
Atsu is survived by his widow, Marie Claire
Rupio, and three children. His passing has left an indelible mark on the lives
of those who knew him and the football community at large. May his soul rest in
perfect peace.
