The Speaker of the House, Hon. Uchenna Okafor, has lost his bid for a third term, with Hon. Abuchi Bernard Udemezue of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) securing 12,993 votes to Okafor's 11,445.
Meanwhile, Hon. Emeka Aforka, the Deputy Majority Leader of
the House, also failed in his second term bid, losing to Hon. Paul Obu of the
Labour Party (LP), who secured 10,212 votes to Aforka's 7,675.
In another surprising result, Hon. John
Nwokoye, the member representing Awka North and candidate of the PDP, lost his
seat to a newcomer, Hon. Chimezie Ikwunne of the All Progressives Grand
Alliance (APGA), who secured 7,199 votes to Nwokoye's 6,110.
Ms Nkechi Ogbuefi of the Labour Party also
retired the incumbent member and PDP candidate, Hon. Ebele Ejimofor, who sought
a third term. While Hon. Ejike Okechukwu of APGA managed to retain his
seat for Anaocha 2 constituency.
In Onitsha North 1, Hon. Douglas Egbuna of
the PDP retained his seat with 7,140 votes against the LP's candidate, Hon.
Chukwunenye Azuka, who secured 7,135 votes. Similarly, in Dunukofia
constituency, Hon. Jude Azotani of APGA secured 7,488 votes to defeat the PDP's
candidate, Achike Onuah, who received 4,333 votes.
Other winners included Mr Ebuka Igwe of LP in
Idemili South, Engr. Emma Nwafor of APGA in Orumba South, and Emmanuel Anayo
Okpalaeke of APGA in Aguata 1. Additionally, the Young Progressive Party (YPP)
won three seats, with Comrade Augustine Onyedikachukwu Ike emerging victorious
in Nnewi North, Nonso Atuchukwu in Nnewi South 1, and Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi
retaining his seat for Nnewi South 2.
While there are still 17 seats left to be
announced, the current results suggest that APGA is likely to win around 16
seats, LP 7 seats, and PDP 4 seats, with the YPP securing the remaining 3
seats. Overall, the Anambra State House of Assembly elections have resulted in
a significant shake-up of the political landscape, with many long-standing
politicians losing their seats to newcomers and opposition candidates.
