The Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) held its first meeting of the year on 3rd February 2025 at the Council Chamber in Awka, where important decisions were made regarding infrastructure projects and environmental issues.
Law Mefor, the Commissioner for
Information, Anambra State, highlighted that the Council warned structures
built without state government approval, especially those on waterways'
right-of-way, are at risk of being demolished. The Council emphasized that such
structures violate the Land Use Act, which grants the state physical planning
authority.
The Council also addressed the
pressing environmental concerns in the state, urging communities to take action
to prevent sand excavation in undesignated areas. ANSEC condemned human
activities that have contributed to stormwater and gully erosion, which are
endangering local communities and transforming the state into an ecologically
vulnerable zone.
In terms of infrastructure, the
Council approved several key projects. These include the construction of a
Protocol Lounge at Chinua Achebe International Airport in Umueri, with a
contract awarded to Gill Associates Ltd. The contract for the rehabilitation of
internal roads at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital
(COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, was also approved, as well as a contract for the
development of a master plan for the Aguata Storm Water Project. Furthermore, a
contract was awarded for the completion of works at the Specialist Hospital in
Fegge, Onitsha South LGA.
The meeting concluded with a
call to prioritize physical fitness, urging members to stay active and healthy.
