By Uche Kalu (Ada Eji Ejemba)

Chief Ezeogo Uma Nchege Nwoke, a renowned icon, has completed his life's journey, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished for generations to come. Born on September 14, 1933, in Ndi Ibe Nchege compound, Ndi Orieke, Ohafia Local Government of Abia State, he was the fourth son of his father and the second son of his mother, late Nne Uwa.

As the Bible reminds us, "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens" (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Chief Ezeogo Uma Nchege Nwoke's life was a testament to this wisdom, as he navigated the complexities of life with humility and obedience, earning him the love and respect of his family and community.

His entrepreneurial spirit led him to excel in agriculture and various business ventures, earning him widespread respect from his community and family. As a successful farmer and businessman, he demonstrated exceptional acumen and dedication.

Guided by his principles of peace, integrity, and justice, Chief Ezeogo Uma Nchege Nwoke built a reputation as a fair and compassionate leader. His passion for trading earned him the esteemed titles "Ozo-ahia Nne Uwa" and "Ozo Buruburu." His business endeavors took him to numerous states, cities, and even international destinations, including Cameroon, Uzuakoli, and Cross River State.

Chief Ezeogo Uma Nchege Nwoke's personal life was marked by love, devotion, and family. Born into a polygamous family, he married three wives: the late Deaconess Nwannediya Uma Obuma, Mrs. Comfort Nnenaya Ibe Idika, and Mrs. Mgbafor Aforji Uma. This union was blessed with 14 children and 21 grandchildren. Despite his advanced age and physical limitations, Chief remained a pillar of love, compassion, and care for his family, inspiring generations with his remarkable legacy.

He was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Amaudo Parish in Ndi Orieke, Ohafia, where he nurtured his faith until his passing on June 19, 2024, after a brief illness.

His home-going celebration, a testament to his impact, began on December 23rd with a Christian Wake keep and culminated on December 24th with his burial. Dignitaries from Abia State and beyond attended the ceremony, honoring his remarkable life. Though he lived a full 91 years, his passing leaves an unfillable void.

Personally, I cherish the decade I knew Chief, brought together by the union of our families through the marriage of my daughter, Favour, to his son. I fondly remember his warm love, wise counsel, and guidance, which he generously shared during my visits. Though I wish he could have stayed longer, I surrender to God's perfect plan.

As we bid farewell to this iconic figure, we take comfort in the knowledge that his life was a gift from God, and that every moment was an opportunity to experience joy, love, and connection with others. May his legacy continue to inspire us to cherish every moment and to live life to the fullest.

Farewell, Chief Ezeogo Uma Nchege Nwoke – an unforgettable in-law, until we meet again at the resurrection morning.
