Hon. Prof. Oby Lilian Orogbu, representative for Awka North and South at Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives, has expressed concerns over the security challenges facing Anambra State, urging prompt action from the state government.
Speaking at the "Female Legislators Constituency Outreach" programme held at Emmaus House, Awka, on Saturday, Orogbu underscored the importance of security for sustainable development. "We can't talk about meaningful development without securing where we are," she stressed, adding, "I implore the state government to, as a matter of urgency, address this issue."
Reflecting on her achievements over the past year, Orogbu highlighted various projects aimed at improving the lives of her constituents. Among the initiatives were the construction of a police station in Ishiagu, renovations of classroom blocks in local schools, and road developments in Mgbakwu and Ogechukwu Street in Awka. "I want to thank you immensely for considering me worthy of representing you in the parliament," Orogbu said, acknowledging the support of her constituents.
Beyond infrastructure, Orogbu has also spearheaded economic empowerment programmes, distributing grants to traders, fertilizer to farmers, and tools like grinding and sewing machines to widows. "This has helped small business owners recover from their losses and revitalize their livelihoods," she explained.
On the legislative front, Orogbu has sponsored several bills, including those proposing the establishment of a Federal College of Agriculture and an Entrepreneurship College in Awka. She has also tabled motions addressing issues from security to housing loan provisions for Nigerians, demonstrating a commitment to addressing both local and national concerns.
Orogbu commended the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, for its inclusive stance, particularly in supporting female lawmakers. She praised Abbas for fostering an environment where women feel "part of the honourable chamber," leading to a "more robust House.
Looking forward, Orogbu pledged to continue advocating for women’s rights, with a focus on combating violence against women and promoting gender equity. As a legislator, she acknowledged that while infrastructural progress has been made, "there is still much to be desired." She expressed her commitment to building on the progress achieved, aiming to bring about more significant changes to her constituency.
