Guardian Editorial on National Commission for Local Government Elections: A Beggarly Bootlicker's Pastime

By Polycarp Onwubiko

The Guardian Editorial captioned: "National Commission for Local Government Election not the answer", October 23, 2024 could have helped the cause of pursuit of genuine federalism which the respected newspaper dwelt extensively in its 64 Editorials on Restructuring the lopsided Federation and a New Constitution. How has the mighty fallen!

It the newspaper Editorial Board could degenerate to such bootlickers level probably to court the favour of the Aso Villa landlord, then can say 'sorry' for Nigeria. Yes, it lambasted the gimmickry of the malleable members of the Upper Chamber of the National Legislature which is deliberating on the Bill to establish the supposed "National Commission for Local Government Election" to stem the conduct of local government council election by the State Independent Electoral Commission ", SIEC, Nigerians expected the Editorial Board to chide president Tinubu for not Convoking Constituent Assembly for a New Constitution which will be acceptable to all the ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.

Nigerian leadership has continued to conduct themselves in such a way that make them the laughingstock in the international institutions. Countries all over the world are sufficiently aware that Nigeria is operating a Fundamentally, fraudulent and deeply defective constitution imposed by the military Regime.

It has been a foolish pastime in the name of "Constitutional Amendments " by the lopsided Federation with equally lopsided members of the supposed Committee on Constitution Amendments that favour the inanities, preferences and venality of the Northern Moslems at the expense and detriment of the Southerners.

The gimmickry going on in the Senate on the supposed National Commission for Local Government Election Bill obviously sponsored by president Tinubu, is simply a roadmap to railroad his way to the second tenure. Having pocketed the other arms of government (National Assembly and the Judiciary) the road to the second tenure is 'carry go' !

The nationwide clarion calls for Restructuring the lopsided Federation with a People's Constitution with Decentralized security architecture, sounds like a canary cry on the rooftop. That is why Nigeria leaders have continued to be a laughingstock to the international community.

The silly idea and shenanigans about local government councils autonomy and National Commission for Local Government Council election is nothing but running away from the needed implementation of the Hon Justice Uwais Report on credible election management but the shameless transactional political leaders would not have it.

Thus the shameless consideration of the Bill on the so-called National Commission for Local Government election in the Senate is an outing of a conscienceless and brazen-faced bootlickers in the Legislature who are gorged with the war-chest of transactional political activists taunting well-meaning Nigerians who desire credible federal structure based on People's Constitution through a Constituent Assembly to reinvent genuine federalism as practiced in the First Republic.

No wonder president Tinubu said that he is no longer thinking about 2027 presidential election because he has perfected deft strategy to bulldoze his way into Aso Villa come May 29, 2027 thus the future chant of "Emilokan carry goo 👏! Who is fooling whom in the already expired Nigeria?

The only panacea to restore realistic principles of federal system of government is to convene a Constituent Assembly of selected representatives of ethnic nationalities to brainstorm on how to birth a Federal Constitution which will be agreeable to all the ethnic nationalities in Nigeria, failure to do that, it is taken that there is a already a "State Capture".
