A section of the Eleme Local Government secretariat has been set ablaze by unknown persons amid the political crisis in Rivers State.
Some buildings and vehicles
were set ablaze following an explosion from a device suspected to be dynamite.
The incident occurred on
Monday, October 7, 2024, hours after an order by the Inspector General of
Police, Kayode Egbetokun for the secretariat of the 23 LGs to be unsealed and
the immediate withdrawal of policemen who had occupied the councils since July.
Former Ambassador, Oji Ngofa,
who hails from Eleme, who confirmed the incident to Channels TV, said the newly
elected chairman Brain Gokpa came to the council secretariat accompanied by his
councilors and supporters but discovered that a few of the buildings in the
council had been set ablaze.
So far no arrests have been
made and the police are yet to release any statement on the situation.
Although details are still
sketchy, the incident comes just days after the Rivers Local Government Elections
which were swept by the Action Peoples Party (APP).
