Muslim North: Unveiling the Fear Behind the People's New Constitution

By Polycarp Onwubiko

Only God knows the "core North" Muslims feel jittery over new Constitution for Nigeria to reinvent True Federalism. Of course it is understandable because a truly Federal Constitution with decentralized security architecture will truncate their dream Islamization agenda with terrorists masquerading as herdsmen imported from the Sahel region of West Africa as the foot-soldiers.

"The 1960/1963 Constitution was working perfectly but the Northern Moslems destroyed it by flagrantly violating the provisions ostensibly to impose their decadent values on the rest of ethnic nationalities. Apart from the supposed “Core North ", all other ethnic nationalities are dissatisfied with the "Federal-Unitary contraption referred to as the 1999 constitution supposedly under amendments ostensibly pander to the Inanities, venality of preferences of the core North.

They made sure that the committee on the so-called constitution amendments were filled with their surrogates hence the rejection of decentralizing security architecture by the Committee.

In the interview with Daily Sun, Sunday September 15, 2024, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, who is noted for sympathy for the so-called "bandits and criminals “manning the so-called "ungoverned spaces” (but all parts of the South are effectively governed) pretended to support new Constitution but said that time for it has not come.

Hear him:

"I support the drive, but the timing is not right. Any attempt by the government to tamper with the Constitution now is like opening a Pandora’s Box.

"The current constitution is not a problem. The problem is in its implementation. Democracy itself gives equal opportunity to all citizens. But in practice, only a few are getting the dividend of democracy especially here in Nigeria.

“Now that we are facing a very stubborn economic situation, Nigeria is not in its right senses to tamper with the constitution. If we do, it won’t end well".

Comment:

Of course, he spoke true to type in line with the position of the Moslems from the "Core North" who have veiled position to maintain the Centralist Constitution imposed by the military which has been at their advantage to have their way in virtually all aspects of governance in the 'dying' country.

In sane and sanitized Federations, People's Constitution is the bedrock of government; it is the First thing to do which gives direction to governance. How can Gumi say that the problem of Nigeria is "its implementation": implementing a fundamentally fraudulent and flawed Federal-Unitary Constitution?

At times when you read the minds of the northern Moslems with respect to the corporate affairs of this country, you feel very sorry for the country, no wonder that the country is wobbling and on the pathway to stoney Golgotha.

Of course they are jittery over the call by the eminent Nigerians referred to as "The Patriots" (led by the former Secretary General of Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku) who, having articulated the primary and proximate causes of the tragedy that has befallen Nigeria, visited president Tinubu and solemnly advised him to accord the Convoking of Constituent Assembly top priority for a New Constitution which will give the country a headway to solve all the man-made problems that have destroyed the country

Sadly, the president had to rely and defer to the "Core North" demi-gods who believe that they would be dictating how Nigeria should be governed. He would not touch that area because it would be a sure way to truncate the dream Islamization agenda. Terrorists masquerading as herdsmen imported from the Sahel region of West Africa have the northern borders flung open for their infiltration ostensibly for ethnic cleansing and territorial expansion to swell the population of Moslems. Who is fooling whom?
