Lagos State medical doctor Idara Bassey, who was declared wanted following the death of a 36-year-old woman during a buttock enlargement surgery in Lekki Phase 1, is now in police custody.
The State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti is currently investigating
Bassey, according to Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin.
Bassey had fled after the death
of Abiola during a buttock enlargement procedure at her clinic on August 26,
2024. The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure, which involves transferring fat
from other parts of the body to the buttocks, has been criticized for its
risks. This scrutiny intensified following the 2019 death of a British woman,
Melissa Kerr, during a similar surgery in Istanbul.
Despite warnings about the
procedure, many women in Lagos continue to seek out BBL surgeries, with
numerous success stories circulating online. The nurse who administered the
injection to Abiola has been arrested, and the clinic's owner, Bassey, became a
suspect following her disappearance.
Abiola had traveled from her
home in Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, Ibeju Lekki, to the clinic for the
procedure. After the nurse administered the injection under Bassey's direction,
Abiola reportedly lost consciousness and began gasping for breath, prompting her
driver to alert the police.
When asked about the
investigation's progress, Hundeyin confirmed that Bassey is now in custody with
the SCID. Details about potential charges and grounds will be provided after
the investigation is completed.
