In the heart of Ohafia, Abia State, lies the land of Ndi Orieke, a rural agrarian community struggling to survive due to a severe infrastructure crisis.
The Asaga-Ndi Orieke-Akanu Ohafia Road, a vital artery connecting several communities in Ohafia, including; Asaga, Ndi Orieke, Akanu, Abia, with potential links to Arochukwu and Cross River, has become a constant reminder of neglect and abandonment. The importance of this road cannot be overemphasised
As an agrarian community, Ndi Orieke's
economy relies heavily on farming and agriculture. However, the absence of a
motorable road has made it impossible for farmers to transport their produce,
resulting in devastating consequences:
- Spoilage and financial losses
- Food insecurity and
malnutrition
- Cycle of poverty,
frustration, and despair
The women of Ndi Orieke bear
the brunt of this neglect, toiling on farms only to see their efforts go to
waste. Sometimes, these women carry their produce on their head from Ndi Orieke
to neighbouring market in order to fend for their family. The deplorable state
of the road has isolated the community, hindering economic growth, social
development, and access to essential services like healthcare and education.
Furthermore, the neglect has contributed to a
disturbing trend - urban migration by youths. Talented and able-bodied young
men and women are forced to abandon their ancestral homes in search of better
opportunities in cities, leading to:
- Brain drain and loss of
potential
- Disruption of family and
social structures
- Increased pressure on urban
infrastructure and resources
We urge the Abia State
Government to take immediate action to address this critical infrastructure
need. A functional road would:
- Boost agricultural
productivity and income
- Empower women and reduce
their suffering
- Enhance food security and
nutrition
- Improve access to healthcare,
education, and other essential services
- Stimulate economic growth and
development
- Stem the tide of urban
migration and retain young talent in the community
We appeal to the Governor of
Abia State to prioritize the rehabilitation of the Asaga-Ndi Orieke-Akanu
Ohafia Road and save the people of Ndi Orieke from further hardship. The time
to act is now. There is need to bring hope and prosperity back to Ndi Orieke.
The future of this community depends on it.
