Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anambra State Chapter, has joined the global community in celebrating International Youth Day, recognizing the pivotal role of youths in nation-building and societal development.
In a message to youths, NAWOJ
Anambra State Chapter Chairperson Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika lauded youth efforts
in improving homes and societies, acknowledging them as the “true heroes of our
time.” The association concluded with a message of continued support and
celebration of youths' bravery, dreams, vision, and hard work.
International Youth Day,
observed annually on August 12, was established by the United Nations to
highlight the potential, achievements, and contributions of young people
worldwide. The day was first commemorated in 2000, following the UN General
Assembly's approval in 1999 of a recommendation from the World Conference of Ministers
Responsible for Youth.
This year’s theme, “From Clicks
to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” underscores
the importance of digital literacy and engagement in fostering sustainable
growth.
NAWOJ Anambra urged youths,
particularly in Anambra State, to harness the vast opportunities in the digital
space for positive outcomes, while avoiding destructive behaviors.
“Youth are the focal point in
the process of progress and development in every society,” the statement from
NAWOJ Anambra reads. “We commend the United Nations for setting aside a day to
celebrate youths, and we remain mindful of the many challenges they face.”
The association emphasized the
significance of International Youth Day as a platform to acknowledge the
valuable qualities of young people and their potential to shape the future of
nations. The day also serves as a reminder of the challenges youth face globally,
such as barriers to education, limited access to healthcare, and economic
instability.
The Union encouraged the youths
of Anambra State to remain focused and to utilize every opportunity available
to them to succeed, thereby making their families, state, and society proud.
As part of its advocacy, NAWOJ
called on relevant bodies to recognize and support emerging leaders by
providing them with the necessary tools to address global challenges
effectively. “It’s essential to recognize their contributions to development
and to support them in overcoming the hurdles they encounter,” the statement
added.
“The world is yours to
transform,” the statement concluded.
