Some angry Nigerians destroyed parts of the MTN office at Festac town in Lagos State.
In a video circulating online incensed customers were seen pulling down a gate belonging to MTN.
Their grievance is over the
fact that their SIM cards were blocked by the telecommunications company.
The company had reportedly
blocked SIM cards over mismatch between their NIN details and the SIM
registration.
SaharaReporters earlier
reported that thousands of Nigeria, had had their SIM cards being barred by the
MTN management.
The disconnection comes as
Nigerian regulators pressure telcos to implement the NIN-linkage policy
introduced in December 2020.
In February 2024, the Nigerian
Communications Commission (NCC) told telcos to bar subscribers who failed to
link their phone numbers to their NIN on or before February 28, 2024.
The deadline was extended to
April 15, 2024, and later July 31, 2024.
The Nigerian Communications
Commission has however ordered that all disconnected lines be reactivated.
The directive was contained in
a press statement made available to newsmen by the NCC Director of Media and
Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka.
